Thanks Costa, :th_thumbs20up:

Funny how they mention 1080P, but the specs just say ----Multiple display mode: 1080i/720p/570p/576i/480p;

Typo maybe..

the firmware is just compressed, not encrypted.Unusual for openbox.
it has 2 usb ports instead of just 1

they say tiger t6 firmware works fine on it.
I am trying to track down the details, since there are 4 different versions of t6

A guy with a dead s16 said the rs232 s16 loader didn't work.
I gave him the s10 v2.0.0f loader and that did work for him.
I don't have an s16 to verify that but he was happy.

Finally received my S16 almost 5 weeks in. The s16 comes with no instruction guide, no adapter and no hdmi cable. The remote is similar in shape to the Optibox Anaconda remote but much less functional then even the Skybox F3 remote. Also batteries for the remote are not included. The s16 boots in pal and is equipped with a European/Asian sat list. It's identical in size to the F3 but many features are lacking. One thing I did notice when setting it up to ntsc was the wide choice of video resolutions. I've only scanned several Atlantic sats but there will be many more posts as to its attributes or more of its downfalls.

I won't elaborate yet since I'm still testing it but in comparison to my Skybox F3 for blind scanning and feed hunting, it lacks some of the basic items that would be expected of a receiver. Just wondering if there any F3 files out there that would be compatible with this receiver?

I assume you still have the original firmware installed?
I think 2.4 is the latest.
They say the s10 rs232 loader works with it,if so,you could use the v2.0.0f
loader to save chunks of firmware to pc or for disaster recovery.

I think the s16 also has a 6pin jtag connector, just judging from mainboard pics I have seen.

I will finish scanning all my c and ku sats before I tinker with it. All I can say is a receiver which cannot produce a sat list unless you have the time to use the find button and insert info is lacking. Another thing to mention is that when you press the info button you do not get the audio or video info as on other openbox/skybox receivers.

there are oddball s16's out there;the common ones will say s3606q on the sysinfo screen and work with current updates. The oddball ones will say s3606d and take special firmware.

Hello Cosactc you posting of the picture of your info screen from the s 16 made me look at a modded bin i have been messing with dr zin posted here around 2 months ago this modden bin works on my s 9 and has a different screens than my s9 does and now i know what they modded this from a s 16?

here is what my info page says sorry its not a picture like yours but looks the same execpt for a feature called radio somthing

bootloader 0.1.0 2009 6 18

upcode upg 1.0.0 2009 5 14

maincode m3602 hd 2012 3 22

radio back 1.0.0 2009 5 8

defaultdb 1.1.0 2011 6 23

userdb 1.0.0 1212 4 12

i wondered what fta type was combined in this modded bin guess it was the s 16 to work as a s 10/9 dr zin whats your take?

modded foreign on s10 – 04-17-2012

From what I've seen thus far, any bin that could convert this receiver to an s9 or f3 would be an upgrade for fta scanning, its accurate scan is also slower then previous models.

s16 is a different processor and not the source for the modded firmware.
I believe it was a german receiver firmware that was modded.

TunaDude

try this dr zin go load your modden bin your self go look at the info screen its just about the same as costacts picture so some how the modded bin from april has the same info screen and you saying it might have been from a german fta? its didnt take me but a second to go load the modded bin and saw the same stuff as the info screen on costacts shot

now dr zin is right 2 different chips so i dont think you could load this bin cause its for a s 10/9

dr.zin

using a different pc right now, loading the bin would be tedious.

to bad this open box s 16 is not up to par maybe they who ever they are will improve it with new firmware for this box.

what ever the reason somone modded a s 10 firmware and made it like it is it does when loaded on my s9 show the info screen just like the open box s 16 and this box does blind scan well has the 2 types of blind scan like the open box s9/10 but i can choose to blindscan just h or just v or both...

can the s 16 let you blind scan either h or v?

dr.zin
07-09-2012, 08:10 AM
why would you blindscan just one polarity?
that defeats the purpose of blindscan.
A better feature would be being able to manually type in ranges of freqs to scan, like the old coolsats.

It's accurate and auto scan do both polarities. I'm so impressed with this receiver that I've already pulled the plug. Carlos if your paying attention to this thread then I would suggest investing in a Skybox F3 receiver, do not waste your money on the s16.

I would load the latest firmware and try again.
Original factory firmware is rarely any good.

dr.zin

there are other m3606 based receivers out there,I would try their firmware.
The s16 firmware isn't encrypted, which allows for some custom tweaks.

dr. zin you asked me

Answer.

The reason is time! blindscan time is important to not waste time in waiting.!

If you could speed up the blind scan speed it takes on certain ku sats by having the option to choose blind scan h only then blind scan v only it would speed up the over all time it takes in your blind scan time.

less time wasting on ku sats with dead space means less time over all in the blind scan on the sats so instead of blind scanning and waiting for the open box to blind scan both polaritys no matter what on every sat were wasting time! time saved means more FEEDS!

here are some examples from my sats i hit and will benfit in less time by having the option of blindscaning h or v and both.

72w ku usual time blind scan regular openbox both polarity around 5 minutes (waste time on h transponder here)

72w ku using modded bin open box choose v only blind scan time 2 minutes! dont need h on 72w so i saved 3 minutes!

83w ku (rtn sat ku) again around five or 6 minutes blindscan time regular openbox firmware

83w modded bin choose h only 1 minute 25 seconds hardly ever any v trransponder active on the v side of 83w

so 5 or 6 minutes waiting for the open box to go throuhg the h and then the v can at times make you miss a some feeds and since the v is a waste on 83w why blind scan it!

another time saver for me was 91w ku this sat has many feeds at times and also because of the canadain broadcaster it slows it down in over all blind scan speed having to wait for it to finish the h side and those 6 tp id get in the 12345h range and up which were bleed over from the circualr gaint on my linear lnb would slow down the scan

blindscan time was from 5 to 6 or more minutes on 91w ku using the regular open box blind scan.

using the modded bin id blind scan the h side first once it hit the first canadain tp i knew there were no more in linear exited and blind scanned the v side also till i hit the first tp from canada exit and wala instead of taking more than five minutes it took all of 2 minutes and 40 seconds did it again this way also 2 minutes 38 seconds on 91 w ku

so this option of either blindscaning in h or v saves time. scan h or v tp will save time in blind scanning over all on 72w ku 83w ku 91wku also 95w ku and 105w ku 95w dont have v's and 105w dont have hardly ever an h transponder those to also save me over 2 minutes but since i dont get to much on 105w and 95w ku i wrote it here.

so 72 83 91 95 105 ku band saves me time by having the option to choose one or the other in a blindscan and once you know your sats like the h side instead of wating and waitng for it to go v and you know there is not gonna be another h feed exit out change to v only re blind scan finish save time find more channels!

i know a mouthful dr z but thats is why i like the modded bin for the open box s9 it saves blind scan time! by having the option to blind scan in either h or v and of course using the option to scan both polarity like on some sats i choose both 103w ku 99w ku as examples those have both h and v active.. but again you could choose the h first then v second and save time on 103w ku to once you know about the cut off of any more h side feeds etc!

with blindscan you don't know what is going to be on the sat, like wildfeeds.
hence the name blindscan.
To speed up scanning I use a standard ku linear lnb, which blindscans from 11700 to 12750,which is faster than
using a universal lnb that was designed for use in europe anyway. They are cheaper so were bundled with dish sales.
Like mentioned previously,I would rather see the option to manually enter the freqs.Like 11700 to 12200 range both v and h

dr.zin
07-09-2012, 05:17 PM
theoretically I could blindscan with my coolsat, then write down what it finds and manually enter into the openbox.
It would miss the hd feeds though. And it has a tendency to screw up my motor.

I flashed my s16 with the latest file posted by dr.zin:

openboxs162.6.rar

One thing to note is that it boots in pal but getting back to ntsc is a piece of cake. Sat list is from 5-61w so you'll need to make changes accordingly. Unfortunately audio and video info hasn't been addressed which puzzles me since all other openbox and skybox receivers had this feature automatically.

Hi guys I'm an old C Band and FTA user and have gotten out of it for a couple of years.I have a coolsat 8100 and 6000, a soncview 360 Elite and an NFusion Pheonix. I would like to get back into it and would like to know what is the best way to proceed. I not crazy about using a dongle over the intrenet. What do you think is the best way to go in 2013 for free tv.
Thank you

For Free TV, you would be best to get that C-Band dish up an running along with KU as a plus ideally..

We don't do the dongle thing or anything illegal here..There are thousands of channels to see with the right set up and no need to steal what is free.

The boxes you listed are not very good for FTA..You need a box that does DVS-S2 HD to take advantage of all the real free channels.

We have many threads here on the various boxes that work very nice..

Please look around and feel free to ask on anything you might not be sure about....

Is the S16 receiver compatiable with the Dish 1000.2 dish

TunaDude
01-13-2013, 01:16 PM
the dish you have is small for real fta but it is made for dish network stuff on 110 119 but the s 16 could hit 110 119 circular like the dish you have if you aimed at it and your s 16 can be set to hit those circular type lnb but the only thing you would see on the s 16 is the one preview channel everything else is scrambled !
