View Full Version : OS MIO 4k no signal after Edison screen

So I have possible lightning damage. Box sat for 2 or 3 weeks with everything unhooked EXCEPT for the coax. Oops!
Os Mio 4k shows the initial Edison screen, then I get 'No Signal' on my tv. Box DOES boot and I can access it using WebIF. Just nothing on the tv. I tried a forced upgrade usb of TNAP 4.1 but when it goes into the initial setup I can't see anyhing on the tv screen. I can hit menu while booting and get the window to select one of the four slots. All four images boot, but still none of my images will show on the tv. I have tried using a good hdmi cable and a different tv.

Any ideas to fix this or am I stuck with a WebIF only box? I can't send it back for warranty.

Thanks for any advice

You should have telnet if you have WebIf.
Start a telnet session while the receiver is using TNAP, then enter INIT 4
Wait about 10 seconds then enter:
ENIGMA_DEBUG_LVL=5 enigma2 > /tmp/debug.log 2>&1

Wait about 5 minutes, then navigate to /tmp of receiver files. Copy the debug.log to your computer, zip it, and post it here.
Maybe the log will show us something. Maybe not. Try it and see....

Yep seems to be functioning other than the video output. Try other video output settings by using webif capture screen shot set to refresh every second. You can also try RCA output with mode NTSC 60Hz through the hdmi cable.

I'll give that a try when I get a chance, Elbandido. No rain for a couple days and I got to do more yard work while I can.

Hi El Bandido, I'm having the exact same problem with my OSMIO4k+ running TNAP 4.1

I tried booting another 4.1 image in another slot, same thing, the "starting enigma2" background picture blinks a few times, and when the bargraph that shows boot progress on the box front display gets at about 30 %, the screen stops blinking and goes black and then the TV says there's no HDMI signal

I have attached the debug.log per your instructions above. Hopefully I did it correctly, if not, let me know and I'll try again

Unfortunately I don't have any other image to try in that box.

Also, at the beginning of the boot, when it briefly displays video, the video has white dots in the picture, a bit like the sparklies we used to get in analog satellite video, but cleaner and smaller.

Thanks

Bruno

Your not going anywhere without a frame buffer. The two logs are different, but they both show this:
[eFbLCD] /dev/fb1: No such file or directory
[eFbLCD] framebuffer /dev/fb1 not available

We will try to fix it by loading a recovery,.

MIO and MIO+ recovery files are in the link above. Information is added above to show which file is mio or mio+.

Unzip the proper downloaded file and copy the osmio4k or osmio4kplus folder and its contents to a blank, Known-To-Be-Good usb stick.
Remove power from the receiver and remove everything connected to the receiver except the usb drive with the proper file and the hdmi cable for the television or monitor.
Power On the receiver and follow onscreen instructions for installing the recovery image.

Well... I have 3 slots that still work using WebIF soooo. Would hate to loose even that.

I bit the bullet and ran the recovery file. Still no video after the Edison splash screen. Was able to log in with WebIF and do the initial setup, still no video on any slots.

But for whatever reason it did not wipe my other 3 slots. I was still able to watch tv on WebIF as before. :smiley14:

Too tired to fool with it more tonight.

Looks like your receiver cannot be repaired without replacing some hardware.

I didn't use the 'force' option though. Would that be a problem?

brct203

Well, I have some interesting update...

I have not yet tried the recovery file that you uploaded, I wanted to do a backup first and also download all the service data to DreamboxEdit, so I tried Magatron's suggestion of setting the output resolution to 480. That worked, I get a picture.

Now here is the kicker... if I choose to set it to 480i or 480p and I do not respond to the question of whether it's working or not, then it reverts to 1080p and... I get a 1080p picture (looks HD to me and my TV also says it's 1920x1080...

Now if I do a deep standby and power up again, i'm back at no video until I do this again. But at least it's reproducible.

BTW, I did not mention this earlier but I had not downloaded any recent updates to the system, unless some happen automaticaly without user input

let me know if I should run more tests.

in a way, I can live with that since I don't reboot too often, but I also want to be able to install other images if needed, or at least to update TNAP to 4.2 at some point (and hopefully future version beyond 4.2) and I'm not sure I would be able to do that trick again during an installation

el bandido
08-16-2022, 10:38 AM
Using the 'force' option to load an image does not change the image. Force only changes the image to load automatically without user input.

brct203,

It would probably be a good idea dump what you have in the receiver and start over. Your log shows an error that should not be there. Install the recovery, then if it works OK for video, immediately load the image of your choice on top of it. Use the same procedure earlier ( nothing on the usb stick except the recovery files, and nothing connected to the receiver except hdmi cable).

brct203
08-16-2022, 05:20 PM
Ok I have another update... and some good progress

I ran that recovery image that you posted, it ran fine, it installed your custom-built openPLI, even with 1080p video. So far so good.

Then if I reboot, i run into the same problem, but I'm able to navigate to the video menu, and set the resolution to 480 and I get a picture. And the kicker is that now I can set the video back to 1080 and it stuill works. But after each restart I have to do this procedure. This is the case on that custom openPLI image, on the TNAP 4.1 that I had before in Slot4 that didn't get wiped, and on a fresh TNAP 4.1 in slot2.

However, I have also installed OpenVIX in slot 3 and that one seems to be working perfectly, even after a restart.

I have not tried any other images, but I certainly could if you think that could help figure out the root cause.

Thanks for the awesome help!

It sounds like you are not making a "Clean Install" and instead are using some settings that are bad?

Try zipping and posting the settings file in /etc/enigma2 of the receiver's files. Let's see what the settings look like.

brct203
08-16-2022, 06:38 PM
ok here are the 3 "settings" files. One from the remaining TNAP41 that I was not using but was installed before the problem started, one from a clean new install I did today and one from the new install of openVIX

el bandido
08-16-2022, 07:50 PM
Look real close at the hdmi cable you are using between the receiver and the tv or monitor. Try replacing it with one that you know for a fact is good if these problems continue.

You may also try the attached edited settings file in your original TNAP. It had an extra entry in it that I removed. To install it, use telnet or putty.

init 4 (Stops enigma2)
Move altered settings file to /etc/enigma2
init 3 (starts enigma2)

brct203
08-17-2022, 10:05 AM
I tried that settings file, didn't seem to make a difference

Also tried 4 different HDMI cables, didn't seem to make a difference

During that test, I ran into another interesting observation:
my TV has 2 HDMI ports. One is labeled HDMI1, the other is HDMI2/DVI

on HDMI1, I can run at 480, but when i tried to switch to 1080p, I get black screen. I tried openVIX there and it was working at 1080, but sudenly the screen went black saying no video signal

on HDMI2/DVI, I can switch the video in TNAP to 1080p and I get a picture, just not on initial boot. And OpenVIX seems to display 1080p reliably even on a fresh boot.

Port HDMI1 on the TV works fine with a PC at 1920x1080

weird, right?

note that this video problem started with the receiver connected to another, older TV through an HDMI switch (which we are still using without a problem with our Roku)

also, I noticed in the setting file, the first line in the one from openVIX is config.av.videomode.HDMI=1080p while in TNAP it's config.av.videomode.DVI=1080p
would that have any importance?

Thanks

el bandido
08-17-2022, 11:49 AM
Yes.
You may change settings file to config.av.videomode.HDMI=1080p and see if it helps. Just remember: init 4, then edit, init 3.
If enigm2 is not stopped using init 4, then your settings edit will fail.

brct203
08-17-2022, 02:05 PM
ok that didn't make a difference

I have now moved the receiver back to its original location, connected to my older Sony TV, and there it won't display anything above 720p through my HDMI switch, and nothing at all if I connect it irectly to the TV without the switch

My guess is that something at hardware level is not right with that HDMI port, but it's not completely dead and it works in some very specific cases that depend on the image and also on the TV/port on TV :-(

brct203

Is there a way I can clear all images, in case there's some corrupt video driver that gets somehow stuck in there? When I ran your recovery image, it overwrote slot1, but the TNAP4.1 I had in slot 4 was still there.

el bandido
08-18-2022, 12:30 PM
Terminal (or putty) is the easiest way to do this.
Telnet to the receiver. Slots are as follows:
mmcblk1p9 = 4
mmcblk1p7 = 3
mmcblk1p5 = 2
mmcblk1p3 = 1

As an example, To clean slot #4, enter the following in terminal:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk1p5 bs=1M count=1

You may also mount the files system for slots and adjust the files or read the files or do other things that need file access.
Examples:
mkdir /media/slot4 && mount /dev/mmcblk1p9 /media/slot4
mkdir /media/slot3 && mount /dev/mmcblk1p7 /media/slot3
mkdir /media/slot2 && mount /dev/mmcblk1p5 /media/slot2
mkdir /media/slot1 && mount /dev/mmcblk1p3 /media/slot1

and after that I should be able to reload the PLI recovery image that you sent and then TNAP from there, right?

el bandido
08-18-2022, 02:58 PM
The Recovery image will only load in slot one. You may manually erase the other slots, or I think you can load a recovery from OpenVix that will erase the other slots automatically. But any recovery image for the MIO should only load in slot 1.

brct203
08-18-2022, 03:50 PM
ok I ran those dd commands on all 4 slots while I was running the image in slot 4

now i've powered it up again with the recovery image on the USB dongle, but nothing happens, all I get is EDISION on the box front pannel display, but no video, nothing

Great that you got it working!
Sounds like you were in slot 4 and deleted the image or operating system for slot 4? So when the receiver booted, it returned to slot 4, which was empty.
Slot 1 is the main slot. It is a good idea to be in slot 1 if you are going to delete the file system for the slot you are using!

brct203
08-18-2022, 05:39 PM
yeah, i kinda cut the branch I was sitting on... rookie mistake and lesson learned! :-)

I have now reloaded the recovery openPLI image, TNAP 4.1, TNAP 4.2 and openVIX, and so far the video problem is still there, just like before today's reload.

I'll keep experimenting in the hope that I find a way that works well enough to be useable without having to mess around blindly with changing the resolution in order to get a picture.

Put the attached, unzipped file for TNAP 4.1 or 4.2 in the Videomode folder at:/usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/SystemPlugins/Videomode of receiver files. Reboot the box and see if there is any difference.

brct203

I tried it on the 4.1 image and that didn't work. Looking at the menu with WebIF I can see that the resolution is now fixed to 1080p. I can switch the refresh rate back and forth, but nothing displays on the TV

I have now reverted to the original videohardware.pyo and it's back to where it was.
now one new observation: when I revert to the original pyo file, using the usual init 4 before copying the file and init 3 after, I systematicaly get a picture on the TV. but if i reboot I don't get one until I do the resolution switch.

What is the make & model of the tv or monitor that you are trying to use?

brct203
08-19-2022, 12:35 PM
the main TV where I was using it and would like to use it is an older Sony Bravia model KDL-40V2500. It's capable of 1080p, and does not accept any 50Hz refresh rate at any resolution. That TV came with 2 HDMI ports but one blew several years ago, so now we use a 5-port HDMI switch to connect the Roku, the Bluray and the satellite box. Interestingly, since the problem with the Edision started, I managed to get it working at 720p through the switch, after going thru the resolution menu as I described earlier. 1080p did not work at all. If I bypass the switch and connect directly, nothing works at all, I tried with several cables.

Now so that I dont monopolize the livingroom TV with this troubleshooting, I've been testing using a more moder TV, a Samsung UN32J525DAFXZA (32" smart TV, up to 1080p, accepts either 50 or 60 Hz), and as I've mentionned earlier, it works better on the HDMI port that is labeled HDMI2/DVI. On HDMI1, I can get a picture but only at 480 or 576.

now, for what it's worth, I tried it with my computer monitor, a cheap Samsung LC24F392FHNXZA 24"1080 monitor, and on that, it seems that TNAP boots fine and gives 1080p video without any workaround. However it was giving me trouble yesterday evening when I was trying to load the recovery image. In any case, that is not the display I want to use to watch TV, but I thought this could be useful information

Thanks!

I find this interesting. I deal with issues like this occasionally. I went through the tv owners manual and looked at the specs.

HDMI IN 6/7:
HDMI: Video: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
Audio: Two channel linear PCM 32, 44.1 and
48 kHz, 16, 20 and 24 bits
AUDIO (HDMI IN 6 only):
500 mVrms (100% modulation)
Impedance: 47 kilohms

HDMI connection is necessary to view 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p
formats. Note that this TV displays all format types of picture in a resolution of
1,920 dots × 1,080 lines.

Now. It's good you bypassed the HDMI multi switch. Through a setup please use just a cable from the receiver to the TV.
If you're dead set on TNAP well okay. Get out of the wizards as fast as possible. Just select a video res that works. Preferably a 1080 mode that you'll end up using.
Have your monitor handy so you can swap cables when and if the tv loses video. You should always get video back on the monitor.

Look at the tv specs. It Always displays in 1920X1080. That's a flag right there. You said you "blew" and HDMI port. Have you physically checked the port for shorted contacts or possible one that is pushed in so it's shorting the shell?

I have 2 older Sony tvs. One a table top projection and the other a KDL model. They never were happy with any switch I ever tried. And back then I tried and returned several.
"Hijacking" situations where a dvd player would always dominate the port. Continuous port switching even when pressing the manual button. Video Mode Not Supported messages through them, but just fine hooked up straight-through.

My osmio4k is kind of happy on the KDL. It's always great on my XBR-920E.
FYI. I cant even reliably use either of the 2 HDMI multi switch on a relatively new Asus monitor on my repair bench. It does have multiple HDMI ports. And the monitor pops up the current video mode for the signal fed to it.

You have tried different images with similar results. I suspect that since you can randomly get and then not a picture. Its probably not the receiver. Lose picture, turn the tv off and back on? Does it come back?

Another FYI. I used openatv 6.3 and then 6.4 like a boss for years. It had all of the provisions for the bells and whistles that makes Enigma2 a joy.
As I got used to the operation and usage of it. I found out that the resolution settings had to be changed for 480, 780 channels to give a nice full screen.
It did take a bit of time to find stable settings. Some would make the tv flash between video modes trying to automatically upscale (which it does awesome).
Within the past month or so I went to openvix. Most, if not all, of the previous changes in its video settings went away.
Matter of fact. Looking at the settings right now.
Automatic res. is disabled.
Mode is 2160p
Refresh rate is multi
Display 4:3 is pillarbox
Display > 16:9 as letterbox.

That's pretty much how it's been. I know I could tweak it further. As it stands though. Those settings were established in the initial setup. I jumped out of the wizard as fast as I could. Setup my network settings. And then configured the tuner and scanned (restored using E-Channelizer) my channels and picons.

If you want to follow this a little bit and try to rule out hardware on the other side of the mio. Please do.

El B. knows his beans. I was just interested in your scenario to give similar findings I've had happen to me.
Good Luck!

Hi Arlo

thanks for the info.

so in my case it's actually somewhat working (but only up to 720p and requiring switching resolution back and forth in the menu) WITH the switch and not working at all if I connect direct (with the old Sony). Like the handsake between MIO and Switch is kinda working and between MIO and Sony is not.

Now I also have another Edision, an OSMIO4K also running TNAP 4.1 (and also 3.2 in another slot) and that one is working flawlessly with any of those TVs

Now about that blown port on the old Sony, well, that one I'm almost certain it was caused by lightning several years ago. That day we had a rather violent storm. I had disconnected all satellite equipment, but we had a cable box connected to that port. we also had another cable box connected to a projector. After the storm, the HDMI port was blown on both cable boxes, on the projector and that one port on the TV.

Sucks you're having problems like this. I jumped into my webif under settings>packages>all and typed in resolution.
It came up with Autoresolution. I installed it and rebooted the box. It took a few to find it. Under setup>system>autoresolution. When enabled a buttload of options pop up.
For me, kind of a diagnostic thing. I didn't try it just yet. But the options list makes sense.
Questions I guess to think about. Your mio works on your newer tv flawless? And a pc monitor is good too?

I'm reading back on your replies.
I guess there are things like defective products and it might be wise to warranty your receiver.
If installing an image such as TNAP or ViX is working "out of the box" after the preliminary setup for the masses and you're an exception. Make the call.

You would think that HDMI is backward compatible. Something strange is going on when you say that using the mulit switch makes the situation better.
Because it's usually worse. But I remember troubleshooting a sat receiver some years back. It came with a chintzy HDMI cable. Of course you want to use a fat, good quality one.
The tv would freeze and switch input channels like CEC will do when active. Another cable. Same thing.
Using the oem HDMI cable made the problems go away 100%. I did a pinout of it, looked at all of the pinout sites on the web. Never really figured it out.

I guess I would say take the modern receiver and use a modern display to install and test. If it works perfect in every setting. You have a winner.
If the old tv is an issue. Well there may be solutions. But it looks like the menu is limited on it.

Now if and when you get a replacement receiver and you get the same thing going on. Well. You have just become a GM mechanic. AKA "Parts Cannon".
Determined to keep that old TV? An option would be to grab a craigs, ebay, or brand new AV receiver with HDMI in and outs.
It's strange that even with your newer tv and different E2 images that the same thing is going on.
There aren't many reports of them showing what you're experiencing. So, hardware? Can't be operator error. Right??
I hauled my osmio4k all over the house and into my shop and although no sat signal in a few places. Old tv's just played nicely with it.

How about this. Grab the latest ViX, TNAP. Overwrite it in a slot. Boot it. Jump out of the wizard as quick as you can.
Setup your tuner. Scan in a sat. Straight from the receiver to tv with hdmi. Use the newest display that you have through the process.
If it works then work backwards. If not. Get a replacement box. You shouldn't really have to go nuts. Both of my osmio4k versions do not exhibit what you have going on.

Edit:

Guns loaded here. Not "The Mexican" though.
Maybe worth a shot if you suspect the tv having damage is a replacement board.
I don't usually perform tv repairs here but have worked on a few for friends. Only if they don't have a "kit" tv labeled Westinghouse, etc. Sony, Samsung. Cool.
Not a hard job really. The usual precautions using a multimeter to check stored voltages. A bunch of screws. Super careful with the connectors. And photos. Take photos.
Look here.

Usually a video-hdmi problem like this is associated with a voltage spike of some type that causes a partial hardware failure.

Put the attached, unzipped file for TNAP 4.1 or 4.2 in the Videomode folder at:/usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/SystemPlugins/Videomode of receiver files. Reboot the box and see if there is any difference. Note that the attached file is named identical to the attached file before it. It will be a good idea to delete the first file and the first zipped file before downloading this one.

well, after I add that python file and reboot, I get a picture. 720p 60Hz, cannot change it (I'm guessing that by design)

but after I restart the box, no picture, and since I can no longer change the resolution, I can no longer do the workaround

I stopped enigma and reverted to the old pyo file, and rebooted but now the AV menu has been replaced with some project-ID menu

I guess I will reinstall TNAP 4.1
