Please first know that I am NOT a programmer and my ONLY Linux familiarity stems from hours and hours of 'fun' attempting to tune in satellites and channels on my Edision Mio+4K receiver that I purchased from Titanium and 'installed' (with Brian's generous and lengthy phone support) back in November of 2020. I wish to update the Edision software (or is it firmware?) to get more current and to hopefully be able to use the updates to assist with tuning in satellites more efficiently.

My situation is complicated by: 1) My 8 foot Orbitron dish is not perfectly aligned on the Clarke Belt. I am not a BUD installer though I have tinkered, once to my peril, adjustments some successful/some not) and I live far from my BUD installer who in 2020 was unfamiliar with the newer 'digital' receivers) when we together installed my BUD out in the middle of nowhere halfway between Phoenix and Prescott AZ; and, 2) my 'positioner' is sadly what I believe was a quality unit (Toshiba TRX-2200) receiver back in the day, that does not interact with my Edision unit (unless there is some way to accomplish this that i am unaware of).

On a positive note, my BUD is currently 'locked' on (the displays says 'SES3/DirecTV 10,12' though I wonder if it is actually SES 18 (103.1W) and I have a SNR of about 11.5dB / 80% and AGC of 94%). A blind scan (with my current Edision and TNAP 3.2) brings in only 16 channels (powerVu encrypted possibly from 3940V?) and NO FTA.A blind scan generates 2 transponders at 10960V 27998 FEC 3/4 DVB-S2 8PSK and 11810V 28000 FEC 3/4DVB-S2 8PSK.

Understanding the context above, and my obvious limitations (which hopefully will encourage all readers of this post to feel BETTER about themselves), I am wondering if someone could kindly provide or point me in the direction of clearly expressed instructions for updating my Edision receiver so I can hopefully restart my C band hobby viewing?

Thank you,

Hello and Welcome to Legitfta.

First thing you should do as your thread title suggests is update the image. Do you have a "Known-to-be Good" usb drive that is at least 2GB in size? If you have the usb drive, then the rest of it is easy.

I do. I will work on clearing it to free up space. I have things to do for about an hour before I can work on that. I appreciate your responsiveness and confidence.

Download this file : downloaded_images.zip
Link to download = [Only registered and activated users can see links]

Unzip the downloaded file once. This should give you a folder named downloaded_images

There should be a zip file inside the downloaded_images folder. Just check and see that it is there. Don't move it or unzip it.
Copy or move the downloaded_images folder with the zip file inside to the usb drive.

Insert the usb drive into the receiver. Reboot the receiver to insure the usb drive is recognized.

Go to Flash image in the receiver menus (Menu--->Setup--->Flash image) Open the Downloaded images by highlighting it and pressing OK

Highlight TNAP-5.1-osmio4kplus-20240512_multiboot.zip and press OK. A window will pop open showing the image slots in the receiver.

Select a slot (1-4) that is empty and has the words without backup beside it. Press OK and the flash should start. Once the flash is finished, you may boot to the slot that has the new image.

You can flash over and erase the 3.2 image. But I would suggest keeping the 3.2 image for a minute as you will have something to go by. The receiver has room for 4 images. So just flash the new image in an empty slot. Basically, you are starting all over as if the receiver was new. TNAP3.23 is an old image and you do not want to re-use anything from it.

I am 'good to go' with a clean, working 4GB USB drive.
SORRY, I did not see you had already provided further guidance. I will work on what you indicated.

THANK YOU!

McAfee anti-virus twice blocked the download when I doubled clicked the 'downloaded_images.zip' file and attempted to save it to my laptop desktop. I twice received an "insecure download blocked" message. I then attempted to direct download to the USB in the E: drive but that transfer was blocked also.

Is there a safe work-around?

Most likely, your anti-virus is complaining about http instead of [Only registered and activated users can see links] Take your pick.
Turn the anti-virus thingy Off and download the file Or download the multiboot file from here: [Only registered and activated users can see links]

I downloaded the multiboot from one of your prior postings because I could not find a way to disable McAfee (for which I imagine I would have had to pay a ransom). I precisely followed your excellent instructions and the TNAP 5 update was successful!!!

THANK YOU El Bandido !

Okay.
Now turn around and update it to TNAP5.1 online. Finish the job.
Boot into the TNAP 5 image slot if not there already. Reinstall the usb drive if previously removed.
Go to the flash image menu (Menu--->Setup--->Flash image)
Highlight and select TNAP5.1 at the top. Highlight and select the only TNAP 5.1 image and press ok.
Select the slot that has TNAP 5 installed in it and select with backup. Press ok to start the download. Do absolutely nothing after this as it is all automatic. The image will download, install, and restore whatever you had in the TNAP 5 image. This process usually takes around 5 minutes to complete.

Hello:

I may have successfully accomplished this. I have...

Tnap5 -- Based on OpenPLi
Build date: 2023-07-17
Last update: 2023-07-17
Enigma version: 2023-07-14 [develop]
Kernel version: 5.15.0
etc. etc. etc.

Does this look to be correct?

Again, many thanks for your expertise and support!

You have TNAP5. While you are here, go ahead and update to TNAP5.1. In structions on how to do this are in post#9 of this thread. Maybe these two pictures will help.

The receiver has to be connected to the internet for the download of the 5.1 image.

After more time and experience, it appears that my new TNAP5 install is working a little glitchy.

After selecting 'scan' (via the green button), some transponders identified within a blind scan stall fail to completely populate. An example is that I am seeing results such as "(6 of 7) Channels Found = 25" with a stalled progress line indicator to the right of the satellite dish icon immediately above the found channels. This has happened on satellites at both 103 and 105 degrees west that tune in well despite the limitations of my dish alignment.

I take it you are not interested in installing TNAP5.1.

Anyway, TNAP 5 was tested before it was ever uploaded to the forum last year. Most likely, the image is working OK.

Your description of the problem is a bit confusing. Show us what is happening in the scan. Make a folder named ServiceScan. Make the folder name exactly as shown using upper and lower case letters as needed. Put the folder on the usb stick and insert it into the receiver. Now when you scan, files will be generated into the ServiceScan folder. Zip these files, or just zip the ServiceScan folder and attach them to a post.

Do similar for your settings. in the receiver menus. got to AutoBackup (Menu--->Setup--->Auto backup). Press the yellow button while in the AutoBackup menu and this action will create a backup file on the usb drive. This file will be located in a folder named backup on the usb drive. Zip the backup folder and attach it. to a post in this thread.

Hi:

I actually did not see 'TNAP5.1' come up as an option. I will retrace my steps to see if I somehow missed it. I assumed (incorrectly) that the '5.1' was reflected in the 'kernel' number. Again, I am not a computer programmer or other digital sophisticate. I will attempt to follow your guidance above.

Thank you!

El Bandido:

You figured it out. I had never connected my Edision receiver to my internet. I found under the 'Expert Settings' how to connect and am now connected. I will go back and follow your earlier guidance to download and install TNAP5.1
Again, thank you!

Even after you update to 5.1, you will still have the scan problems. Just follow the simple instructions about getting the backup file and service scan files. Those files will explain probably what is happening. There are lots of radio entries on 105w c band, and a scan of that satellite can take over 1 hour. It is possible that you are getting some 105w c band transponders when you scan 103w, which again would cause the scan to take 1 hour or more. If True, The scan logs will show this...

Hello again El Bandido...

I have successfully upgraded to TNAP 5.1! It was remarkably easy once I followed your instructions.

However, the few channels/transponders I was able to capture on 101W (only a weak Daystar), 103W, and a handful of 105W are no longer being received. I am also not having any luck with the Signal Finder. You referenced (above) the 'simple instructions about getting the backup file and service scan files' but I don't know where to find these. I appreciate your patience with me.

Is TNAP5.1 displayed in Menu--->Information--->About?

Look on the usb drive that was in the receiver. Is there a folder named backup on it? If there is, Zip it and attach it to a post. Else you will have to painfully list what is in the antenna setup menu. (Menu--->Setup--->Tuners & scanning--->Tuner configuration--->TunerA), then list the settings you have for 105w and 103w. Heck of a lots easier to post the backup file if one exists...

I believe all is well! The Signal Finder is working as I was between 2 satellites but was able to discriminate the relative strengths of the 103 W and 105 W satellites. I moved the dish a tad west and successfully scanned 105 W which generated around 10 video channels (including duplicates) but over 1100 radio feeds. It appears that the Signal Finder will serve me if I attempt to tune in more satellites. Integrating a communicating 'dish mover' with this Edision receiver AND being aligned on the Clarke Belt someday would really be something.

I have more setup to accomplish as I am receiving a 'Please configure a location in plugin settings' message with every channel I view. The 'plugins' idea is still over my head (and I don't want to erase the progress made). I will do some searching of LegitFTA to learn more about the Edision receiver.

Again, many thanks El Bandido!

You are not going to hurt anything. Everything is recoverable.
Most likely, you are being prompted for a location in one of the weather plugins. This will allow the weather for your area to be displayed. Weather Plugins are located in: Menu--->Plugins. The weather plugins will be at the bottom of the list.

backupsuite is another plugin that allows a complete backup of the image. You need to make a file on the usb drive named exactly backupsuite.txt. This file may be empty as the only purpose of the file is to direct the plugin where to store the backup. As you can see, it is a good idea to keep the usb drive connected to the receiver at all times because it can be useful for many things.

Feel free to ask anything you want to know about. That is what the legitfta forum is for.

Here is a recent blindscan of 105w c band:
18360

As you can see in the results, it takes a long time to scan 105w c band in part because of the numerous radio services listed.
The scan log will show exactly how long it takes to scan a transponder. The DVB-S 4033V 5426 SR transponder took a little over 1 hour to scan and returned nothing as shown here:
18361

The full scan log of this satellite is attached and the correct folder that is needed to capture it on usb drive is attached in a zip file. Scan logs are generated after every scan and end up in /tmp of receiver files if the correct folder is not available on the usb drive.

Tools are available for satellite dish adjustment or alignment. There is a signal meter app that is available on Google Play for Android smartphone or other Android devices. IF you have wifi network that the Edision can connect to, and IF you have a wifi signal for that network at the satellite dish then you may use the signal meter app to help align or adjust the satellite dish.

The signal meter app also announces the signal reading in audio, so you do not have to look at the Android device while adjusting the dish. I use a combination of Android phone with the Signal Meter app, and a TinySA Ultra Spectrum Analyzer. I think I have about $200.00 including accessories in total money spent for the TinySA Ultra. The TinySA Ultra itself does not cost that much, but I got a band-pass filter to look for 5G interference, and that thing was around 50 dollars.

The Signal Meter app does not cost anything, but the receiver has to be connected to a wifi that has signal at the satellite dish. And you also need an Android device of some type to install the signal meter app onto.

The TinySA Ultra needs a splice into the lnb and the receiver has to be powering the lnb for it to work. The TinySA Ultra displays ALL of the transponders for one polarity, and is a great tool for dish adjustment and alignment. Most times, the TinySA Ultra will display the satellite transponders before they are strong enough to be seen by the fta receiver.

Here is a screen shot of the Signal Meter app on a smartphone and the TinySA Ultra being used for dish alignment yesterday. Note that no wires are attached to the smartphone as it gets the signal information from the wifi network the receiver is connected to.

A scanning coding error has been found. This error is causing the long delays in the scanning of the 105w satellite, c band. It will be fixed soon. More information about this error will be in the thread link below.
