I had that problem with my S9 when using it with a no-name usb HD enclosure. Seems to be a timing problem in the usb port and firmware . It did work properly with an earlier version of the firmware, but then again, the early gremlins returned. This problem materialized when I started upgrading to newer versions. Finally solved it by just buying a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex Drive.

Prior to the Seagate, I tried three other no-name made in China enclosures and they did not work on my S9 prior to the firmware updates. When I connected them to my Sonicview 8000 HD and Raptor the no-names worked just fine.

I honestly have never recorded with my S10 because it was broken forever. I am currently able to record with my 1tb Hitachi drive with no issues now that the receiver is fixed.
