The procedures described here are for OpenPLi based images. OE Alliance images also have provisions for complete image backups, but the procedure is different than OpenPLi.

It is a good idea to make a complete backup of the image so you will have a complete restore point. Complete image backups should be made before downloading updates or installing items such as skins. A complete image backup could be thought of as taking a complete snapshot or picture of the files and settings in your enigma2 receiver.

To make a complete image backup using usb stick, you will need a working usb stick with a file named "backupstick.txt" installed on it. (The backupstick.txt file lets the receiver know that it is ok to use the usb stick for image backups.)

Insert the usb stick containing the backupstick.tx file into the receiver, then highlight and select BackupSuite from the plugin list.

Press the Yellow remote button to start the image backup. Highlight and select "yes" to begin the backup process.

You should see some activity on the screen when the image backup starts.

The entire backup process will complete, usually within 5 minutes or less. The amount of time it takes to make the image backup will depend on several things, so wait for it to finish.

A message will be shown, and a complete description of the backup will also be shown once the image backup is complete.

There may be two folders on the usb stick after the backup is finished.

A proper backup will have the following files inside the folder:
    BackupSuite.log
    imageversion
    kernel1.bin
    rootfs.tar.bz2

The kernel.bin file is the kernel. The rootfs.tar.bz2 contains all of the image folders.

The rootfs.tar.bz2 is usally between 70 and 100 MB. The size of this file will depend on the items that are installed in the image.

To install a properly backed up image, Insert the usb drive that contains the image into the receiver, select BackuSuite from the Plugins menu, press the blue remote button, then follow onscreen instructions.
