CALGARY - Still being treated for injuries from a police standoff, once-escaped killer William Wade Bicknell begins his return to court.
The 42-year-old 500-pound man or an attorney on his behalf is scheduled to appear in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., court May 26, facing 32 criminal charges from three locations in Alberta, the most recent being Sexsmith.
There in March he allegedly took the Grande Prairie RCMP though a day-long ordeal involving a high-speed chase and an armed standoff, resulting in injuries to himself and one officer.
Bicknell's current medical condition is not known to police -- he had been receiving treatment at an Edmonton hospital.
"Last I heard, I think he was in a (correctional) facility that included a medical facility," said Sgt. Tim Taniguchi of RCMP "K" Division.
Taniguchi said the facility would still be in the Edmonton area.
Bicknell was charged with breaking and entering, unlawful confinement, unlawful confinement with a firearm, pointing a firearm, robbery with a firearm, five counts of discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life and flight from police.
He also faces three counts of attempted murder, two counts possession of a prohibited weapon and six counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon for the Sexsmith incident.
This came days after RCMP "K" Division stated he may be in the Peace Region after he overpowered a corrections officer in the Edmonton area while on a day-pass from a life sentence for the 2003 bludgeoning death of a B.C. woman.
For the escape he is charged with escaping lawful custody, theft under threat of violence, breaking and entering, two counts pointing a firearm and unlawful confinement with a firearm.
Bicknell also faces charges out of Vegreville, Alta., of kidnapping with a firearm, unlawful confinement with a firearm, pointing a firearm and breaking and entering.
"Everything was going to be handled in Fort Saskatchewan was my understanding and from there the court dates would be drawn so as not to lose jurisdiction," said Cpl. Carol McKinley of the Grande Prairie RCMP.
