BlackBerry PlayBook Thoughts & Observations - As a Remote & More

I have been very busy and it is way late and I've had a beer and a half...wife is in bed with the grandson and I finally made it here.

Dam mower, 1973 Wheelhorse wouldn't start, jumped it, wouldn't charge...test meter went kablooy, had to order one, 9 feet of BS to mow the yard! Didn't get a beer till now...ruffin' it I'm telling you.

So I bought myself a Playbook. I couldn't justify $299 at Christmas as I just built a killer desktop and bought the wife and I laptops.

Well, at $119 for a 16GB I had to bite. When it came out it was $599. It had no email, contacts or calendar that business people wanted. It was not Android. The HP sold out fast.

With the OS 2.0 release, a variant of the Unix OS, the Playbook rocks! I have a Roku hooked to the 42" via HDMI and I have the composite hooked to a RF modulator going to the bedroom 32".

I also have the desktop hooked to the bedroom 32" by HDMI. I can stream Netflix from the Roku or the desktop to the BR 32". I can control the Roku through the desktop with a little program that sends it commands over the network. I have an IR remote that is cumbersome, but works pretty good.

In comes the Playbook. I paid $2.99 for the App and it will send commands to the Roku over the network and you don't have to point, or try to see a button in the dark...it just works and it is the best remote I ever bought!

I know, I might could've waited and found a free App or maybe done one myself like the one on the desktop that works from any browser. Again, the Playbook...with its full browser ability there is no need for a facebook or ebay, or youtube app. It will display and navigate web pages just as they are on a desktop or laptop.

It will navigate routers and modems and I can stream anything on any computer on the network to the Playbook. The video is totally awesome and the sound rocks too.

People returned these because they were not Android and no angry birds. Well, it runs Android apps now with OS 2.0. More on this in a minute.

I study everything, always, and rarely make a mistake (except when it comes to women), got that right this time too, I'll die before I fail this time, excepting all responsibility for my past.

I knew what the Playbook was and when I seen it at $119 I jumped on it, and they wouldn't let me have two...I'm glad now, cause I'm getting a 64GB as soon as I find the right deal.

I know any Android tablet can do the same thing with the right app but most are cheap. Pick up a Playbook and feel it. It is a solid piece of technology, build very good and released too early without proper software support with a price that couldn't compete with the trash Androids on the market. I like that HP Web OS, and the Toshiba Thrive...But look at the price.

I know the next tablets will have virtual sex with you, but for today take a good look at that Playbook.

I have not touched on the free games and stuff that are "Native" to the Playbook. Those are fast, and more stable and more robust than the Droids. The Droid apps are side loaded and google maps crapped out on me. Even a hard reset didn't work. What worked was remove it and re-install it.

Hello Windows:

Old joke:

There are three engineers riding through the desert when the car dies. One is a mechanical engineer, one is a chemical engineer, and the other is a Microsoft software engineer.

The first one says I think the fuel pump quit. The second one says, no, I think the fuel is bad, and the third one said, I think we should close all the windows and open them again.

Anyway, the Droid Apps are going to be as virus ridden as windows is. I have already seen Droid AVG for your tablet in the markets. The playbook is the only tablet, read that again, the only one approved for USA government use and in Australia.

So, what does this have to do with FTA? My PB just got my mail next to me. I can pick it up without any effort. Really it did. What I was going to say was this little device has satellite GPS that can track me to the bathroom and shows my movement to the other end of the couch.

Add MiFi: Not needed because there are so many idiots...A Smoke shop here in town has free access to their entire system, router, modem, register....I don't know who is in charge but I should charge them to secure their network. My PB alerted me to this and ask me if I wanted to "Hop on it".

Back to FTA. The PB has been rooted to use the Android Market etc. But with the current release of OS 2.0 = 2.0.0.7971 it has not been compromised.

This is said to be the "Boot loader" and we all know about that. You cannot force it to boot another OS but you may be able to get it to load code that RIM does not want it to.

Hence: The Playbook is not approved for USG use if it has Android apps installed.

My poor friend Don who is about 75 years old got a kindle fire as a gift from his daughter. It is a media consumption device like a DTV or DN receiver, an appliance. You cannot get more than they let you.

I have been in computers for over 30 years and remember when I could edit (Hex) the floppy disk to give you enhanced color on games. You had to manipulate one bit on the floppy data before it loaded to get the same color that you got on the "New" model that claimed "More Colors".

I said "poor friend" because there is no way to have him send it back and get what I got without offending someone.

RIM is running the end game too. They are rooting (no pun intended) themselves in business and government. If ever comes an app that can spy on the "man", I'll be using the mans hardware. We all know toilet seats, pliers and screws cost thousands of dollars!

See: The Man, that 70's show and check out that PB.

I posted this of my own free will without force or cohesion of any kind.

RIM=(Research In Motion) for those that don't know. They are a worldwide leader in the early cell phone industry with over 60 million devices in operation.

I'll take my check now Mr. NEW CEO whatever.

This tablet is truly amazing...RIM will not willfully open it up...But...

I can do a lot more than read books or flip retarded birds.

I'd be angry if...
