Bought a Motorola 4DTV DSR922...

Hi all.
What is it good for in FTA ? What is it not good for ?
Has empty front and rear card slots , no instruction manual. If you know a link for downloading, please help.

Hi Externet. The dsr922 is good for a dish mover. There may be a few fta channels for it but you will have to make sure the battery and memory are still good. If you look in the Cband 4dtv section there is some information on that. You can also still subscribe with it if the unit id has not been corrupted from a dead battery. I haven't scanned the fta arc lately because I have a custom lnb on my primary C-band dish.

At any rate the dsr is good for analog feed hunting even if the battery had failed. Once the battery fails it cannot subscribe or open itc 4dtv channels (fp) I think zk channels (zero key) can be had with a failed battery receiver and definitely the analog feeds which are still out and about (powerball drawing comes to mind)

In order to view itc channels on it the receiver will probably need to be remapped. There is a universal mode that you can sometimes access itc channels with that is probably on the receiver. I have remapped several of these receivers and can make custom maps that I also have the tools to flash the receiver with. The first step is to make sure your unit id is still good and the battery is OK. Changing the battery is possible but a critical procedure indeed.

Overall the dsr922 is the best receiver for this segment of satellite because it does all of the digicipher2 symbol rates. The dsr920 is lacking a couple.

To check the unit id you need to go into the diagnostic menus. There should be more info for that in the 4dtv section. If not I can walk you through it. If you plug in the receiver and it says 1 you probably have a dead battery or it factory reset. If the time shows it may be good.

There may be a videocipher2 module in the rear of the receiver. It is roughly the size of a current fta receiver. You can remove that is it no longer serves any purpose. (the weather channel was fta periodically and left analog a while back) There is a battery inside of that which can leak all over the boards. The card readers are of no use that I know of. I believe there are still 2 full time analog channels C-Span and one other. A nice thing about the transponders for 4dtv is they are more powerful than most dvb transponders. You can have a smaller dish and still get a picture.

Thank you, Rob.
After reading what I could found about the unit, downloaded its user manual; and this baby is waaaay beyond my brain. Also, have no plans to remap (whatever that be) by myself, nor hire service from 4D TV (if exists)
From posted concerns about the memory backup battery, opened it as to replace it with a Lithium-ion 18650 cell as I have done before to other equipment, and found the 3V Varta battery being 3.15V-healthy, so I did not perform the surgery, nor even cleaned the dust in it.

Am good at electronics servicing technical tasks but an idiot to operate them.

So this unit is too much for my brain to operate/understand.
Connected it to a TV, without LNB input and shows menus and choices I prefer not to alter/mess with. The motor drive port does work putting out plus/minus 28 VDC

If anyone is interested in this DSR922; I could trade for something interesting. What I use is in my 'signature' below and still pleased with it. A BUD mover that can work in conjunction with mi X2 mini premium is on Santa's list; if such thing exists. Currently I move the dish with a separate supply and directional switch I rigged. Has two remotes, a General Instrument 'AnyWhere' and a 4DTV, both in ugly condition.

If you are able to replace the battery I would recommend it. It will give the receiver a much better chance at surviving and increase its value. It may very well be the original and when they go many times they leak. I am not very good at soldering but was able to replace mine with no issues. I have a few of the units myself so I'm not in need but I can help you with any mapping no problem.
