Building a fence

Got a pretty big project on the go here at the ranch and thought I would share it with you all.

I wasn't really all that keen on building a fence. I kinda liked having the openness of the yard without a fence. But due to some shitty neighbors that can't keep their animals on their own property we were left with no choice but to put a fence up. We would also like to get a dog ourselves in the future and I just hate the thought have putting a dog outside and tying it up. Especially when we have a pretty nice sized backyard.

I started researching this about a month ago. There is a ton of options you can go with and trying to find the right mix of esthetically pleasing and cost containment is kinda tricky. I'm not a big fan of chain link and vinyl is WAY too expensive so we chose a pressure treated wood fence. Would loved to have gone with cedar but the cost is just too much - we have almost 300 feet of fence to put up.

Anyway, here is some pics of our yard before any work has been done.

When we started pricing things out I wasn't sure what route we wanted to take. Did we want to get a contractor to do the whole job? Did I feel like doing the whole job myself? Did I feel like only doing some of it myself - mainly getting a contractor to put in the posts and I do the rest?

In the end, after analyzing costs, we decided to get a contractor to install the posts and I would do the rest of it. That was the BEST decision we have made so far. 45 posts is a chit load of holes to dig (even with an auger) and a chit load of cement to mix.

Here is some shots with the posts installed. The contractor did a SPECTACULAR job....I am very pleased.

Love the Flowerbed very nice.... ;)

I for one am so excited about this fence beside the money, sick of nosy neighbors too and not feeling comfortable sitting in our own back yard.... And I know it is gonna look AWESOME when it is done.....:bigclap:

Oh, I forgot to mention, we have decided to go with a shadow box style of fence (see pic below).

Nice work on the fence Lee & you did a great job on the flower bed as well lol. We put a fence up some years back just for the dogs.

We only have posts in so far bro.....that pic of the finished fence is just one that I found on the net somewhere so that everyone could see what style we are going with....I can only hope that our turns out that good. I'll be posting more pics as we progress.

Well, all the stringers are now up. It's going a lot faster than I anticipated (must be because of the awesome helper). We have now started hanging fence boards. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. Boy, you sure don't realize all the elevation changes in your yard until you put a fence up.

Here's some more pics.

Nice job so far bro, The hard part are those post. I help a friend a few years back with his ranch type fence. He use a guy that had a post hole digger. We have that red clay here its some tough chit. Good luck with the rest.

Oh forgot fok U Lee.

Yeah, that's why I paid a contractor to do the posts. If there was only 15 or 20 posts, I may have considered doing it myself.....but there was 45 of the fokkers.....it was worth every penny to pay someone else to do it.
