My team off to a good start!
The Blue Jays are off to a 2-0 start to the season, a promising opening that has seen a continuation of the club’s home run power from a year ago, and two excellent outings by its young starters.
Kyle Drabek followed up a strong performance by Ricky Romero on opening day with a seven-inning, one-hit gem against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday afternoon before 27,194 at the Rogers Centre.
Newcomer Jayson Nix and backup catcher Jose Molina homered to pace the offence, as the combination of power and pitching turned back the Twins 6-1.
The Jays now have six homers in their first two games while their first two starters — Romero and Drabek — have combined for 13.1 innings, with only four runs allowed (two earned).
The win for Drabek marked the first of his young major-league career. He debuted in the majors last September after an impressive minor-league career, but went winless in three starts.
Nix, in his first at-bat as a Jay, and Molina put the Jays up 2-1 after four innings in a mostly tame affair that started with Drabek and Twins starter Francisco Liriano shutting down batters for much of the first three innings.
Toronto broke open the game with three runs in the fifth to chase Liriano, who was 14-10 a year ago.
Jose Bautista drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single from Adam Lind.
Liriano was pulled from the game in favour of Kevin Slowey, but the Jays kept rolling. Edwin Encarnacion greeted Slowey with a roller directly up the middle of the infield. The Twins had no play on the ball, and Bautista was able to score from third with no throw.
Jays manager John Farrell brought in left-handed hitter Travis Snider to pinch-hit with two out in the inning and two aboard, and Snider delivered with a two-run double to send Toronto up 5-1.
Shawn Camp threw a perfect eighth — with the help of a wonderful, diving get by Nix on a grounder to third — while Marc Rzepczynski sealed the win with a scoreless ninth.
The Jays have now knocked out 23 base hits in their first two games of the season.
