The antics by LulzSec over the past few weeks may have attracted a bit too much attention, at least for those involved in the group. Their veil of anonymity and fearlessness may be finally crumbling. Some unidentified individuals are taking matters into their own hands, feeding LulzSec a taste of their own medicine - revealing the identities of (suspected) LulzSec members to the world.
A new blog, LulzSec Exposed, began its first day on Blogspot with a mountain of IRC chat logs and personal information for a handful of LulzSec members: Kayla, BarretBrown, Joepie, Nakomis, and Topiary. Of these persons, Topiary admitted to being part of LulzSec via their official Twitter page. Three of these persons are from the United States, while one is from Sweden and one from the Netherlands. Mr. Brown has also contributed to various publications, including the Huffington Post and The Guardian.
Amongst the blog posts, there is also evidence that suggests some of the LulzSec members used to be part of Anonymous, based on similar IRC nicknames they use.
LulzSec has, not surprisingly, mocked the accuracy of the posted information. Despite that, the confident public face they put on while revealing their exploits on their site and in explaining their antics may be one giant facade, as members are being extra cautious thanks to the extra scrutiny they now face from the general public and authorities alike.
Sabu aka God aka Brazil
Sabu is probably the oldest member of the group. Close to thirty years old, Sabu hails from the lower east side, where he had a troubled High School career. Sabu is relatively intelligent, but is resentful of the authority and success of people he perceives to be less worthy than himself.
Sabu is the most experienced, skilled member of lulzsec, and functions as its leader, mostly through intimidation. After suffering humiliations a decade ago following his posting of rambling, incoherent manifestos on defaced websites, he fell into obscurity until publicly associating himself with the Anonymous protest group. After publicly disgracing Anonymous with the HBGary intrusion, bringing much unwanted attention to Anonymous activities, he sought to recover the limelight by recruiting Topiary and Tflow.
Tflow aka Bottle of Rum aka Tmesis aka Sejus Christ
Tflow, aka Timeflow, is the pseudo-intellectual of the group. Tflow is less interested in publicity than he is in cash and illegal ways to obtain it, and the possibility of being a contract hacker. His commitment to Lulzsec is on-again off-again, and appears financially motivated.
Tflow could be from the UK (London), and his interests include PHP and stealing bank passwords. He has written on the dangers of politically motivated "hacktivism," making his associations with Anonymous and Lulzsec a touch ironic.
Topiary aka T aka WhirlPool
Topiary is the least skilled member of the group. During his time with Anonymous, he demonstrated a willingness to take risks with the media, and did many voice interviews. Topiary operates the Lulzsec Twitter account and uses his media contacts to hype the groups activity. He possesses few skills other than his ability to make wisecracks and charm reporters.
Topiary is a thrill seeker who loves attention, and is thrilled with the idea of having "fans," media attention, and a large twitter following (despite that following being comprised mainly of kayla's bots)
Kayla aka LOL aka Parr0t aka Xyrix
Kayla is the head sociopath behind Lulzsec. He possesses no conscience, and his favorite activity is attacking/humiliating his perceived enemies. Kayla has little skill but impresses people with an impressively large, purchased botnet, which has been used in the past mainly for knocking rivals off their internet connections.
Kayla's bizarre behavior and female impersonation go back a number of years. His female persona seems to have been created to facilitate flirting in the notoriously homophobic hacker scene. Kayla has claimed to be a sixteen year old girl for about eight years now. He was referred in HBGary hack as 16 year old girl.
Joepie91 aka Joepie92
Joepie is a current member of Anonymous, and operates a number of websites used by the group. He feels he is operating legally in his participation in the group, as long as he is only offering material support. Logs show him to be a full participant with access to private irc rooms, but he appears to feel he is committing no crimes as long as he personally abstains from accessing websites, a position he also took during the HBGary intrusion.
Joepie is a bitcoin supporter/enthusiast, and seems to have encouraged its use by the group.
