Glad you got it going again....
I learned the hard way to keep a good backup for restoration when all else fails. It has saved me many times, when you can't explain or figure out what the h*** went wrong. I don't use windows restore, but a program called R-Drive Image, to backup my data hard drive. In less than five minutes I will be up and running again with a good restore point. I also keep my most important settings written down in a text file so I can access them in an emergency. Plus if possible, I keep screen shots of certain programs, where keeping info in a text file would not make sense.
I play (test) with many supposedly free programs during the week and it never fails when one will screw up the registry and/or other settings. Using the backups and KIS has saved my butt many a time.
