A mass of frigid Arctic air continued to blanket much of Canada on Sunday, with much of Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada facing bitter cold weather and windchill warnings through the day.

Environment Canada warned southern Ontario to expect windchills as low as -40 Celsius through the day, compliments of a frigid air mass moving down from northern Ontario.

Windchill warnings persisted in northern Ontario, where several towns were without power as they battled conditions that felt as low as -50 C with the windchill on Saturday.

The town of Moosonee, Ont. on the edge of the James Bay declared a state of emergency Saturday, after the power went out during extremely cold weather.

Power was restored Saturday afternoon, but Environment Canada says the area will face similarly bittern conditions through Sunday.

There were very few regions in southern Ontario that were not warned to expect the worst on Sunday.

A swath of Ontario from Halton County to Cornwall was put on alert until at least the afternoon, when windchills and temperatures could improve slightly under sunny skies.

The City of Toronto remained under a cold weather alert on Sunday, as temperatures hovered around -20 C. The weather warning is expected to last through Tuesday.

With the extreme cold weather alert in place, street outreach workers tried to convince Toronto's homeless population to venture indoors to stay warm.

In Montreal, temperatures remained below -20 C on Sunday, the second day of a cold snap that filled that city's homeless shelters to capacity overnight.

The region was told to expect a bite to the air Sunday night, with conditions feeling as cold as -39 C with the windchill. The rest of southern Quebec and New Brunswick has been warned to expect similar temperatures.

It's not the time that worries me, I leave at 3:30 for Montreal but my job has me outside from about 6-10 am supervising truck loads- extra everything tomorrow lol.
