Scored BIG TIME today

And I am not talking about the back seat of a car either.

I just brought home a 9.5 foot SOLID one piece Kaultronics dish. I'll post more pictures and info once I get it set up and operating.

This is a classic from the 1980's Stainless Steel...

Yes - it does weigh a ton.... killed my back getting it loaded and un-loaded. I should have it mounted in the ground tomorrow.

Now that is what I call motivation!!!!

Joe knows something that a lot of people do not: These commercial dishes will usually have more gain and give a lots better performance than a hobby dish of equal size.
Another thing is cost. The commercial dishes are so expensive that most of us could not buy them new. So we have to settle for what we can afford. EB

Got the dish mounted on the pole today. Spent the better part of the day pressure washing the dish trying to get 25+ years of crudd removed.... Big joke.

I should be able to get the feedhorn mounted and maybe get it aligned tomorrow PM.

This thing is rather top heavy on the pole, so I will probably have to beef up the mount - still pondering the best way to go about this.

Pictures will follow soon.

Yes, it has a 36" actuator on it already.

Funny that with a dish this size you would think it would require at least a 5 inch pole. The polar mount is equipped to handle a 3.5 " pole. This is great becuase that's what I already have in the ground. It just needs some side braces to keep the whole thing from swaying in the wind.

Nice, I had to use side braces in my last home, the wind was nasty. What type of feed are you going to slap on it?

I'm not sure what type of feed I want to go with. Right now I have a DMX741 C/Ku and it seems to be working really good. I have been wanting to play around with Ortho Feeds, so I might look into a Bullseye and a few Norsat LNBF's.

What are you running on your set up?

I still have some tweeking to do. I have very good signal quality across the ARC, but I'm a little off at the Zenith. I cannot seem to get the 850 W test card at all. - Funny - I had it but kept screwing around and lost it.... Too big of a hurry I guess.

I'm using a geosatpro c2 lnbf just for c band. Initially I had a wideband corotor for circular sats as well with norstar lnbs but the feed never performed the way it should have. I also had a dmx741 lnbf but it always seemed that ku band suffered, I'm real pleased with the geo.

Ok, I have had the dish up and running for a few weeks now. Alignment was fun to say the least - the actuator when bad and caused the VBOX to burn up a transformer. I replaced the VBox and put a different actuator on the dish and it seems to be holding up fairly well.

I beefed up the pole mount because I noticed some movement in high winds. Looking back I wish I had cut the pole down a little so the dish would be closer to the ground.

Still have not decided to paint the dish or leave it with the old tarnished look....

I totally changed the feedhorn mounting structure. The "old" four leg version was un-stable and way overkill. Calculations were very close on the length on the legs - so I only had to trim them down in length once, until I reached the correct length for the focal point.

Still need to decide on what type of feed to go with. Been wanting to try an Ortho feed, but the cost is a little much - still thinking this through....

With the DMX741 signal quality is great. getting ~ 80 to 87% on C Band and 70 - 75% on most Ku band sats.
