Should helmets be mandatory on Canada's ski slopes?

Helmets would be required by law for all downhill skiers and snowboarders in Nova Scotia if legislation introduced Tuesday is passed.

The new law would go into effect next November. The province has three ski resorts that open regularly every year.

Many CBC Community members commenting on the story said making ski helmets mandatory was overkill.

"Pretty soon there will be legislation requiring us to wear helmets when we are outdoors," said skeptical1.

"I've been wearing a helmet for the past five or so years and couldn't imagine skiing without one now, but I find this law to be completely unnecessary. Right in the article it says 11 people since 2000 have suffered injuries because of not wearing a helmet - one per year!" said nmm666.

Commenters who support the law, like tovemagret, were in the minority:

"I am totally amazed at all the negative comments. It certainly won't hurt you to wear a helmet and will save your life if you crash into a tree or another skier. We in our family ski at Whistler and wear helmets. We feel it is in our best interests. There are too many wild skiers and boarders here," said tovemagret.

Well, considering the number of people that slip and fall in the shower, each year, I guess that will be the next piece of stupid legislation. When will politicians stop trying to shove their collective noses up our backsides?

lmao, you always give me a good laugh EC..

Looks to me like one should be able to make the decission themselves!!! If they decide not to wear a helmet and they crash and get themselves killed, their out of the gene pool,.... looks like a win, win situation to me!!! LoL

Maybe they can have short yellow buses for ski lifts too.

Yup, and maybe waxing of skis should be outlawed, and instead a roughed coating could be applied to slow skiers down so that if they are in a fall/accident, they won't be going fast enough to get hurt or hurt anyone else. What's next, helmets on water skiers and jet skiers? Make no mistake, a wipe out on water can hurt like hell. That's experience talkin'.
