Toronto man due in court to face animal cruelty charges after raccoons attacked

TORONTO - A man is due to appear in a Toronto court today to face charges after baby raccoons were attacked by a homeowner.

Police were called in June after neighbours awoke to the sounds of a man allegedly attacking a family of raccoons with a shovel.

Animal services says one baby raccoon suffered some broken toes and was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation centre to recover.

Police don't know what happened to the other babies because the mother raccoon took them away.

Dong Nguyen is charged with cruelty to animals and a weapons offence.

The maximum sentence for cruelty to animals is two years while a conviction on a weapons charge can bring a sentence of up to 10 years.
