Expert says consumers are driven by price and early access

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Piracy is alive and well here in Canada.

In fact, 81 per cent of consumers now admit to pirating TV, movies, and video content online. And they say they will continue to do so, mainly because of price, a desire for earlier access, and a perception that "everyone is doing it," says Michael Paterson with Canadian entertainment & media group PwC.

"What this consumer survey shows is that there is unfortunately a willingness for people to engage in piracy," he explains. "They just can't avoid the allure of getting things for free. Computers and the Internet obviously make that possible."

Paterson adds mobile piracy is also likely to increase due to smartphones. He says fighting piracy remains a struggle and is a huge concern for entertainment companies, especially now that access is easier than ever.
