I noticed a member asking in shout about 83W being dead so thought I would start a thread about it.

So since RTV left it is pretty much toast and there is no full time active TP to even lock it in that I am aware of.

You would have to wait for someone who has it locked to find a wild feed then run after it and lock it before it goes away.

:peace:

Really not sure where to post this question and seeing as how this post makes reference to an almost empty sat I thought I'd put it here. We all know that transponder space is expensive to rent but how can sat owners afford to have these birds orbiting earth with nothing on them. AMC9 is almost empty except for a few C-Band channels and whatever Ku Band feeds they get. G28 isn't a whole lot better. Can anyone explain the rationale?

That's a good point and one that I can't explain..They both have good coverage (footprints)

I have no idea why!

There is a black hole sucking everything and having people somewhere (DC) with the pockets full, named charlie. There will be the day when only Echostar sats will be out there!!!:bow:

There has been a 4:2:2 barker channel on 83W for about 3 weeks now offering a short term transponder lease.

Would probably be the perfect location for a new legitFTA channel

There are four permanent channels on the c side, 3 of which are Spanish and the Pennsylvania News Network. Feeds pop up on both bands quite often with Nascar and golf being the most predominant.

there could be stuff on it we don't know about;like all the stores that have point of sale terminals with a sat dish on the roof.

Having extra satellites in your fleet gives you backup capacity for when one of your heavily used satellites fails. Contingency plans are in place to move the most valuable clients to new homes. Sort of like insurance.
