Hello all. Noob here. A couple of questions.

I've been researching a bit lately and would like join in on the fun. I recently put up an attic antenna setup which has re-peaked my interest in FTA. If I can pull in a number of good SAT channels to supplement the OTA system, I will drop my cable subscription.

I have an old FTA system from my illegit days. 2 smaller dishes, 3 LNB's and a Coolstat 8100 HD PVR. I,m currently using the Coolsat for an ATSC tuner with my antenna, and the picture is amazing.

I am unclear on a few things and could use some help. From what I understand, if I purchase a 33" or larger dish with motor I can pull in KU band birds. Is this correct ?

Can I use the LNB's I have now, or do I need to purchase a specific LNB ? Recommendations ?

Will the Coolsat 8100 Diseqc 1.2 support control the dish motor properly with my Chieta diseqc switch ?

Recomendations on brand of motor ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mope welcome to Legit! If your lnb's are for subscription satellite they won't work for fta. I am sure other members have recommendations for a good LNB. I purchased a few on ebay for around 10$ each and they work well. I also have a Coolsat 8000 however I no longer use it. The 8100 should move the dish fine. I use an sg2100 motor and it is compatible with about a dozen of my receivers including my 8000. It would be easier for you to pull in channels if you get a blind scan capable receiver. I am not sure about your particular diseqc switch however I have been successfully using my coolsat 8000 in the past with a basic 4 to 1 diseqc switch.

I personally do all of my blind scanning with my X2 HD receiver. It is the fastest scanning receiver I have used and it has great sensitivity.

Welcome to the site Mope. A 33" dish would be big enough but 36 or 39" much better for ku band. Your receiver should not have any problems on fta at all but I'm curious if it has an s2/8psk board or a turbo 8psk one. Back in the illegit days were you able to scan in any hd channels? Your lnbs are probably circular so you would need a linear one, 11700-12200. I had an sg2100 motor for about 5 years that run flawlessly but am now using actuators. I'm sure there are many members here that will post their recommendations as well.

The 8100 will do dvb-s2 via manual entry however certain channels will not have the proper audio settings causing no sound. I was never able to find a channel editor for my 8000. I also believe that it will not do symbol rates over 30000 for dvb-s2.

Thanks for the info.

I see I have some googling to do. dvb-s2, symbol rates, s2/8psk, etc. About LNB,s. Linear it is then, but what is a Universal LNB. The name leads u to believe, well,,, that its universal.

A universal lnb would be required on some of the Atlantic ku sats and scans all from 10700-12750, whereas the linear will scan 11700-12200 which is required on the American ku sats.

4 years ago I was where you are now, this is what I did, to keep my other half happy I got a small sub with DN.
for me and testing, I had a Sonicview, SV 360 Premier so I ordered a 39 inch hot dish with an HH motor and an Invacom Quad Polar Legacy
4 O/P LNB, Part no QPH-031, I still use the dish and LNB to this day, I say don't buy more than you need to get started, start small and
learn then you can move up as you learn, I think if you ask most of us started this way, if you need more help just ask.
