A very good morning to all and hope everyone had a nice weekend. The snow has about disappeared and the ice went off the small lake behind my place. Tuned up my lawn mower, wood splitter and ATV. Even cleaned some of the yard.
Some news, been hit with a ransomeware virus, C/4, C/5, it encrypted my files. Lucky for backups etc I only lost about 6 months of saved files. It took time to get up and running as I was being very cautious and did several virus scans over a few days. The visual characteristics was the internet slowing down to a crawl then freezing, refreshing constantly. All this stuff over a period of about three weeks. It got so bad I actually tore the computer down and cleaned reset everything. Thought the mother board was crapping out and would immediately turn the computer power supply switch off then reboot, that would clear things up for a day or so. The virus program that was running missed it, so moved on to another. Been on the internet since day one and this is the first time my puter was put down, dead. Any other experiences out there, hear that ransomeware in some form or another is becoming very popular.

Good afternoon Dave, EC and all Legit folks. Dave, glad you got your computer running again. Luckily, no ransomware here. Out of the blue ran into a problem with WIN10 not booting up Saturday. Thinking I might have a heat problem or virus, I took the computer apart and cleaned out the yearly dust build up. Cleaned the contacts, connectors,fans etc.

Still no boot, froze up during the boot process. Luckily, I have WinXP64, Win8 and Win10 on the same computer, which makes it easier to diagnose. Booted to Win8 and scanned the Win10 drive, fixed the corruption errors. While in Win8 restored a recent Win10 backup. Rebooted to Win10 and only got as far as the diagnostic menu. Let Win10 do its thing, but it couldn't repair the corrupted files. Let it reinstall Win10 while it claimed to save my existing files and it rebooted fine. Everything worked except most programs needed a reinstall of license and settings due to the registry being over written. No time for that.

Rebooted to Win8 and restored the same backup for Win10. Rebooted and everything working as before, except lost about a month's worth of info. The culprit turned out to be a usb 3.0 pci-e card that had a corrupt driver in Win10 which would not allow the boot process to proceed. Did a virus, root, malware scan along with a drive check. Luckily, it wasn't the power supply or the hard drive or a virus. Don't know how the driver got corrupted, gremlins.....

And I thought I had a problem. No idea where it the ransomeware was picked up. Now how would one reinstall win10 the way its put out there today, could be a charge?
 
Gotta be careful what you click nowadays, never know what you'll pick up. Reinstalling WIN10 shouldn't be a problem if it was activated during the original install.
