Mount Manager

I am confused by the Mount Manager and Setup Mounts screens and how to use them. Can somebody either explain how to use them or point me to somewhere where this is discussed with respect to an Edision Mio+?

Maybe a short explanation of what you are trying to do or what you want to do? Here is a pretty detailed description of how things work:

In general, I like to know what menu items in the Edision do even if I don't use them. But specifically, I think it began with an early version of TNAP6 that after installing the image, I didn't have access to my hard disk for PVR use. I think it was some simple configuration issue. I corrected by playing around with the Mount Manager. But I know I didn't know what I was doing. Today after installing a high capacity USB memory stick to use as my temporary PVR storage, again I couldn't access the stick. This time my playing resulted in the Edision becoming unable to start even using power on. I had to restore using an image backup so it's running fine now.

I'm pretty sure this has all been due to my lack of understanding of what the Mount Manager does, how to use it properly and my misuse of it resulting in causing my own problems. What is the correct path for the PVR storage: /media/hdd?

No reason for the receiver to become unusable by simply adding a drive that I know about.

If you carefully read the links I provided, I think most menus and options for storage will be explained. I do not mind explaining in detail, but there is no reason if the information needed already exists.

Most of these settings are what you want them to be or what they need to be. Let me explain:
The correct path for PVR storage will be the correct path for the device you want to be your PVR storage. If you want to use the usb stick, then point your PVR storage to its correct path.

If you have a decent LAN, by decent meaning enough speed to record and do whatever else you want to do at the same time, then you may want to point the PVR storage path to one of your network shares and have the PVR recordings dump straight into a computer or a router's storage for example.

Pretty much any healthy usb drive that does not require external power can be plugged directly into the receiver and used "As Is" If you are having problems with a good usb drive that works on your home computer or laptop for example, but is not "Seen" by the receiver, then we need to look at it and found out why. A reboot may be needed after the USB drive is installed before it becomes usable.

And we have a dandy little way of looking into the receiver files using the receiver itself. The Dream-Explorer plugin allows you to look at the files system, so you can verify the usb drive is installed and seen by the receiver using the Dream-Explorer plugin. Any external drives will most likely be in /media of receiver files once they are recognized after a REBOOT.

Basically, the enigma2 receiver is a stripped version of Linux and will operate the same or usually similar to other Linux computers when it comes to storage devices. Linux can "see" most formats of a drive, but Windows for example cannot "see" some Linux drives. This is why i say most any usb drive you stick into the receiver should be recognized and usable for PVR storage, provided the receiver is properly pointed to it.

I think a lot of your problems stem from a poorly coded NetworkBrowser plugin! I even managed to find a receiver lock-up as you described. Let's see if we can get this straightened out.

I've got my Mount Manager pointing to my memory stick and recording paths (Menu>Setup>System>Expert settings) set for the same path. So the PVR is working fine now. System restarts properly. When my new hard drive comes tomorrow, I'm sure I can substitute it using the same path and not worry about it for another 16 years.

Excellent!
Glad the PVR is working for you now! I went ahead and fixed the other problems that you saw. The receiver was looking for a share password, and that is probably what locked your receiver earlier. This has been sorted and should not cause anymore trouble. Thanks for finding it and bringing it to my attention! The NetworkBrowser plugin can be updated online or simply flash 0928 image.

Recordings can also be done using multiple paths, but of course only one path at a time. A PVR recording over the network and straight into my computer is shown below. The epg is a nice touch that helps identify the exact recorded content.

A decent working PVR is very nice to have, and there are some tricks to be done with it if you get "creative". Enjoy your new hard drive!
