Octagon SF8008 Supreme

Thanks, but I will probably pass on sending a TS file because usually that is nothing more than a waste of my time.

The problems I have shown are not special or exotic. But they are problems. Multi-stream transponders with watchable channels are available here in North America on rare occasion. Multi-stream transponders are common in Europe, so there should be no need for a TS file from me.

After ten days, my supreme managed to catch a flight from Frankfurt. Checked
flightradar and the LH400 landed at JFK today. It will probably vacation there for a few days and finally catch a burro for delivery in a week or maybe two.....lol

Octagon SF8008 has 4 image slots. These slots may be mounted and files swapped between them. Be careful when doing this because there is little protection in the way of mistakes. If you delete something, it is deleted! The only exception may be the image that you are currently running. Some things might not be deleted unless enigma2 is stopped in telnet using init 4.

To mount all 4 slots a usb drive or internal hard drive is needed. Make a folder on the external/internal hard drive. Name the folder anything you want and then mount the slots using this command in telnet: mount /dev/mmcblk0p16 /media/usb/slot4

Let's look at the telnet command a little bit. My target folder is named slot 4, and it is located at /media/usb in the receiver files. mount /dev/mmcblk0p16 tells the receiver to mount mount mmcblk0p16, which is the location where all 4 image slots are stored. So mount /dev/mmcblk0p16 /media/usb/slot4 when entered in telnet mounts mmcblk0p16 into the slot 4 folder. To unmount, use the umount command or reboot the receiver. (umount /dev/mmcblk0p16 /media/usb/slot4)

Good to know. Looking forward to trying this receiver.

Did a tracker check today on DHL and it shows as leaving JFK on the 11th and going back to Frankfurt and then two different flights to other airports in Germany. Might just be a tracking error but there doesn't seem to be any further info on its whereabouts available. Sent an email to the vendor, will see how they respond. Hope it's just a tracking error.

Kudos to the vendor for replying quickly with a tracking number with the US post office awaiting shipment from NYC. It's been sitting there since the 12th. The USPS equivalent to amazon's prime delivery......lol

I find the receiver sensitivity of the SF8008 Supreme to be similar, almost identical to the older SF8008. The SF8008 Supreme shows a bit more signal than the SF8008 on a weak transponder, but the SF8008 shows a better picture on a weak transponder than the SF8008 Supreme. It is almost certain that I could find a different weak transponder where the Supreme shows a better picture than the older SF8008.

Finding a transponder that does this is normal FTA tuner stuff and really means nothing, except receiver A is doing a bit better with this particular transponder than receiver B. There is very little reception difference that I can find between the older SF8008 and the newer SF8008 Supreme.

The SF8008 Supreme may read a bit higher in signal than the SF8008, but that also means nothing. You are not going to get an accurate reading of satellite signal from a consumer grade FTA receiver. We could go into the enigma2 coding and tell it to give the SF8008 Supreme a bit higher reading in the signal area. There would be a group of people that would swear the Supreme was better and point to the higher signal reading as proof.

Weak signal TV picture comparison. (Neither is watchable as there are too many errors.)

Showing a signal below lock is nice. A 16apsk transponder with a 4/5 fec takes a decent amount of signal to lock. Then you need a bit more signal above lock to see a picture or hear audio.

Shown below is a 16apsk transponder that was being used as a sports feed. The signal has been dropped a little bit, but that is normal considering the time. The SF8008 Supreme is still able to lock this transponder, but move the dish a click or two and the signal unlocks. On receivers that do not show signal below lock, you have a signal of about 12 db or nothing. Sometimes this is hard for folks to comprehend as to WHY this happens.

89w-sf8008-supreme-not-locked.webp

89w-signal-finder-apsk.webp

Transponder Signals like the one shown above are WHY you need a quality lnb instead of a lnbf. You need every bit of signal you can get with these types of transponders. Bit errors add up quick!

Would be nice of other image groups would adopt what is needed to show signal below lock, but as of today, no other image group has made provisions for it. At least it works for me. :)

I see DreamPortugal has the Supreme in stock now and they're selling it for 144.90 euros. In early February, ebay and the German site, TelevisionTech were selling them for 139.00 euros.

Hopefully, mine should arrive Monday. Really pathetic that it took 5 days to go from the NYC facility to the Jersey facility. The traffic on the George Washington bridge or the Holland tunnel must have been pretty bad.... lol

Shipping from DreamPortugal using the expensive DHL is usually around 5 days for me.

I wanted to find out why the Supreme is hanging on both blindscans and Service Scans. The receiver appears to go into a trance on some transponders. TNAP 5 & up Has some extra scanning information in debug. I find every time the Supreme hangs on a scan, there is almost always no signal present. This is aggravating to deal with because I am used to enigma2 receivers finishing their scan.

Further investigation shows the Supreme is logging some transponders that are below lock one half second, then briefly above lock the next half second. In other words the problem transponders have a seesaw effect in regards to the signal, which in turns makes the receiver hang. The SF8008 Does Not have this problem, and it seems the solution for the SF8008 is to not log the transponder that are like this. Also, it is easier to see the problem when the Supreme can disoplay signal below lock.

One example today was a 32apsk transponder that I had roughly 10db on, but needed about 12.5-13.0 to lock and be usable. The signal would go up to the locking point, but would immediately fall back down. My antenna system was too poor to lock it, and the SF8008 Supreme was confused about it to the point where it hung on this transponder when trying to scan it.

Then the bright idea occurred to show the signal in db for every transponder that was scanned. This ended up being a hours long event, and also ended up about half way complete: I can log correct signal levels for transponders with channels, but cannot log correct signal levels for transponders without channels. My coding abilities are about as good as a cracker jack box.

Shown below is a scan of 117w c band that has signal in db for the found services. Figuring out exactly why the SF8008 Supreme is hanging was hours long adventure. But anyone ought to be able to duplicate the SF8008 hanging if they do enough scans (feed-hunting). This was the easy part. Finding someone that is interested and capable of fixing it will probably be the hard part.

The SF8008 Also has bluetooth (5.1?) capability. To date, this feature is useless for me. I tried OpenVix, OpenATV...etc. Useless Bluetooth for me.

They should have left out bluetooth and for a couple of more dollars added a third tuner.

Just curious, but have you checked if the second tuner blind scans?

My guess is yes if you get the SF8008 Supreme Twin and leave the useless (for the USA) SF8008 Supreme Combo with DVB-C / DVB-T2 tuner out of the mix.
As far as BT goes. Anyone try using at least a keyboard?
With all of the OTA terrestrial stuff going on, any built in tuner for that should tell you to look away.

The second DVB-S2 tuner is doing ku band duties, and works I guess identical to tuner One. The original SF8008 had scan problems with the second tuner, but those issues were resolved and do not seem to exist in the Supreme version.

Shown below is a blindscan of 89w ku that was done yesterday. It logs a 32 apsk transponder that needs about 12.5db of signal to be usable.

My dish system is averaging around 10db, but the signal bounces regularly to about 12.5 db.

So the Supreme has blind scanned a signal that is below lock. The Supreme will hang for an indefinite period when you try to scan this transponder for channels because it is below lock and cannot be resolved.

Having the ability to see the signal is below lock is a big help in understanding the problem. No image group, OpenATV, OpenPLi, OpenVix has adopted the ability to let the Supreme show signals below lock. So most users would see this transponder in a SF8008 Supreme as being scanned without a signal and wonder what the hell is going on. This needs to be fixed. You want to find transponders, but you do not want to find transponders that are unusable to the point the receiver hangs.

My c band lnbs are Norsat 8000RI Extended band. These lnbs work well over a wide range of frequencies and have a 5750 l.o. But they are a compromise. A larger band almost always leads to less sensitivity. If I had a decent set of 5150 l.o. lnbs yesterday instead of extended band, i may have locked the 32apsk transponder. I would guess you lose a db or 2 on extended band.

Probably, at least 80% of the time, the Supreme has no issues scanning. Shown below is extended c band on 65 west. This satellite is not very strong for me and has some transponders hanging around the threshold of lock/unlock. I can't recall the Supreme hanging on this satellite.

61w c band Is hit or miss. This is a weak satellite for me with transponders below lock. It is pretty common to get a receiver hang when scanning/blind scanning 61w.

My Supreme arrived today and since I haven't used ATV for a few years, I was surprised on how much bloatware was added to the plugin extensions.

Tried deleting some of the bloatware using the uninstall extensions button, but they were not listed there. I installed an ipk uninstaller via Filezilla, but that program couldn't list or find the commercial bloatware either.

I made a full backup to my ssd drive and it took 15 minutes. Not too thrilled with the speed, so I installed backupsuite hoping it would speed up backups in the future. Had to changed the backupsuite sh files to 777 and add enigma2-plugin-extensions-backupsuite.control file to var_lib_opkg_info in order for ATV to recognize it. It did recognize it, but I got as far as display of bad magic number error per the attached pix:

ATV Backupsuite bad magic number.webp Could be I am using the wrong version of Backupsuite.

Installed PLI 8.3, last version before they started working on 9.0. Tried 9.0 but I was unable to get wifi or lan working in the two last builds. Also, installed TNAP see pix:

TNAP version.webp

So far working ok. Now to test some more.

Finally! Excellent to have another set of eyes on this receiver!

TNAP will need updating under Software update in receiver menus. There should be a TNAP 5.1 available under Flash image. That is the one I would load. Backupsuite is default in TNAP and you should find it working properly.

The Wifi is different from the SF8008. Cannot remember if I got the wifi working in TNAP 5 or not. Wifi works in TNAP 5.1.

Flash to 5.1 worked fine.

Actually I was referring to backupsuite not working on ATV. While using ATV, I switched to MCelliotG's skin to checkout the cpu temp (thanks MCelliotG). Switched to the Oman HD channel on 97 ku (because it is 1080 HD) and let it sit there for 30 minutes. The cpu temp average was 68-69C. Then removed the receiver cover and let it sit on the same channel for 30 minutes and the temp dropped to 64C.

Digged up an old intel cpu aluminum heat sink and sat it right on top of the cpu heat sink. The temp dropped down to 49-50C.

If anyone ever tries this, be sure to power off before touching metal on metal on the cpu heatsink. Not shutting the power off will cause the display to go nuts..... A putty reboot will not work. Only a cold boot will bring things back to normal.

Pictures of the modded heatsink would be nice!

Attached is a python script that shows BER, Lock, and signal using terminal. To use this script, unzip it and install it somewhere in the common receiver files (/media/usb, /tmp....etc). Open terminal,Change Directory in terminal to the proper location of the script, then start the script by calling it using python. Example = python dvbcsv.py. No need to do any other changes.

The script is set for tuner one(A). It can be changed to tuner two(B) by changing the line numbered 88 from - to:
dev = "/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0"
dev = "/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend1"

This script may be allowed to run or it may be started at any time signal information is needed. It does not require a stop-start of enigma2. The script may be stopped by keboard using Ctrl + C. This script is useful for watching lock and signal i terminal and may be used in scans.
