I've been using windows 10 for some time now and am getting fed up of it. It has a tendency of updating itself 2-3 times a week and sometimes takes hours to be able to use my laptop again. I remember discussion a while back about other choices and was curious as to what other alternatives are out there. I am not extremely computer literate so please be patient with me if I do decide to change and I will probably ask plenty of questions.

Just google O&O ShutUp10 Version 1.4.1383.1, download and install it (it's free). Click off most of the boxes and your 10 will no longer update and will leave your computer alone.

If you need a screen shot of the checked off boxes and the program itself, I can upload it.

I'd really appreciate the screen shot if it's not too much of a hassle.

Here you go...

Assuming that there isn't something wrong with the Windows 10 update process, getting stuck in a loop or something else stupid, the best thing you can do to speed up a laptop (or any system, but laptops tend to be particularly slow at disk access) is to switch to a solid-state drive. They're pretty affordable these days unless you need a huge one.

I had an issue trying to log in as I couldn't remember any of my passwords. I did a factory reset and now am back to windows 7 with all the previous junk removed, the laptop is running super fast. The use this laptop gets is limited to e-mail and a handful of net sites, kind of like the speed of it now and will just leave things be.

Now just turn off the auto updates and it will stay that way, and be sure you install some good AV, malware and spyware programs along with CCleaner, that will keep it in tip top shape.

O&O updated their software from the one listed in post #1. A LOCK screen option was added, which is why you were presented with the screen asking for your password. I had to changed mine to Red, because I was presented the same screen upon boot up.

In the future, should you decide to return to what you had, you can go to the action menu and select Undo all changes. As always, select Create a system restore point, prior to making any changes.
