random redirects

I keep getting redirected randomly to some strange sites. It mostly happens in the feed sections. How can we stop this?

Check your spam blocker, antivirus, and/or your all in one proggie (internet security suite) to make sure it's set to block redirects. Firefox and Opera also has the capability to block redirects in their preference section, but they don't always catch them.

I still get the popup window every once in a while with Kaspersky Internet Security, but at least it's blocking the redirect. I use to get the following pop ups, but now they are automatically blocked:

Most problems were from Russian sites..I blocked the whole IP range from Russia a while ago to help..
There is a new VB version out and once I have the time to overwrite the whole Forum this should take care of any remaining issues..

I started getting multiple redirects, one on top of another, when going to the "X2 receiver support" page. I reloaded the page and watched what sites it is trying to go to in addition to legitfta.com. These three came up that bothered me:

acrosslookups.com
realitypayouts.com
moeaelochka.com

The "realitypayouts" one is apparently triggering the others (and then the numerous stacked ones), so I blocked it manually. I will watch to see if that fixes the problem.

Note: If one or more of these sites are the source of income/support of the forum, I would rather just contribute to the site directly than get the potentially dangerous redirecting.

I did some tweaking today, let me know if anyone still has this issue and I will look further..

My Avast antivirus has been coming up whenever I click onto the X2 Premium HD disc. section. Says 'Trojan blocked' with an alert tone.
Has been happening for about a week..

Thanks for looking into it.

Well, after wondering what all the redirect issue was all about, I am now seeing it first hand. Starting yesterday, I have been redirected a half dozen times and then again, this morning, when I clicled on the "Random Chatter" button on the Forums page. This time I was redirected to a "earn income" site and it would not let me out by using the back button. I had to restart my laptop to get back here. This is now the third time that a redirect has forced me to do a restart

I actually use an add-on called Adblock Plus, and it allows custom filters to be added. That is what I did here. I am going to look at what eastof111 posted, too. That may be simpler.

You can also try Tools>Options>Advanced>Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page.

Actually, you'll always be better off having an all in one suite that has AntiVirus, ad blocker, firewall, malware, root etc. I've been using Kaspersky Internet Suite since 1997 and it's always come through for me, plus it's not a resource hog like some other brands. If you check Fry's Electronics website, they usually have this on sale for $50 with a mail in rebate for $50. So, in essence it's free after you receive the rebate. Fry's has been pretty good in processing their rebates.

There are freebies out there like ZoneAlarm, Norton and more, but they aren't as capable. Comodo offers a freebie also; I read good reports about it.

...And then there's the old standby of using your HOSTS file to redirect sites to localhost. An internet search will find lots of info on this topic.

I wish there was a Fry's in NH. I am stuck with just Best Buy and Radio Shack.

As Sublime said, you can always use your Hosts file in windows to block garbage. It's a pia to maintain but aside from that it is effective too.

In WinXP, edit the hosts file which is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc with any text editor. Just copy and paste the url address of the offending pia site in to the file. Add 0.0.0.0 as a prefix to the url address. Be sure browsers are closed before editing. See attached example of a hosts file.

Anyone know of a way to block sites effectively in Ubuntu? Running both Ubuntu and Windows 7 but I have been using Ubuntu exclusively for the past 6 months and have no desire to go back to Windows.

EC, on your Ubuntu install, the hosts file is located in the /etc/ folder. The file name is simply hosts (no file extension). You can edit the file using gedit, nano or any other text editor.

Here's a pdf describing how to both for Ubuntu and Windows, even though you're not using it.
